The simple answer is yes! Carrots are a great treat for your dog, they are low in calories and packed full of nutrients and you should not worry about either feeding your Shih Tzu carrots as a small treat or combining it as part of a balanced diet.
Carrots are a very healthy food to feed your Shih Tzu. They are a highly nutritious food rich in essential vitamins and minerals. They are a great source vitamin A, vitamin K, potassium and fibre. They also contain essential minerals such as beta carotene that the body converts to vitamin As.
They are also low in calories making them a great choice for a treat. This is especially important if you are training a young Shih Tzu and need lots of treats throughout the day or your dog is on a reduced calorie diet due to health reasons.
They are also a good choice for teething puppies due to their tough consistency making them perfect for relieving the pain that comes during this phase of your puppies life.
Although carrots are low in calories compared to other commercial dog treats they still contain sugar. And although they contain healthy sugar, too much of any sugar can be a bad thing. This is particularly important if your dog is on a restriction calorie diet for health reasons.
So as with all treats and foods, it’s always best to feed them in moderation as part of a balanced diet. As a general rule if you are giving your dog carrots as a treat try not to give them more than 10% of their overall diet.
Whenever you are introducing a new food to your dog’s diet you should start off with small portions and see how your dog reacts. Although it is highly unlikely your dog will have an adverse reaction to carrots it’s always best to take this approach just in case.
You can try with small raw chunk at first but if your dog does not like the crunch you can also try them with cooked carrots instead.
If your dog show any adverse signs after eating carrots or you have any concerns whatsoever it’s always best to talk to your vet and get a professional opinion.
