They are also low in calories making them a great choice for a treat. This is especially important if you are training a young Shih Tzu and need lots of treats throughout the day or your dog is on a reduced calorie diet due to health reasons.

Dangers Of Feeding Your Shih Tzu Carrot

Although carrots are low in calories compared to other commercial dog treats they still contain sugar. And although they contain healthy sugar, too much can be a bad thing. This is particularly important if your dog is on a restricted-calorie diet for health reasons.

So as with all treats and foods, it’s always best to feed them in moderation as part of a balanced diet. As a general rule if you are giving your dog carrots as a treat try not to give them more than 10% of their overall diet.

How To Introduce Carrot To Your Shih Tzu's Diet

Whenever you are introducing a new food to your dog’s diet you should start off with small portions and see how your dog reacts. Although it is highly unlikely your dog will have an adverse reaction to carrots it’s always best to take this approach just in case.

You can try with small raw chunk at first but if your dog does not like the crunch you can also try them with cooked carrots instead.

If your dog show any adverse signs after eating carrots or you have any concerns whatsoever it’s always best to talk to your vet and get a professional opinion.

Healthy Dog Treats

It’s perfectly fine to feed your dog fresh carrots but some dog owners prefer to opt for dried treats instead. They are less messy and can be beneficial when training your dog.

If you do opt for dried treats make sure you check they are a healthy option with no added sugar, preservatives, or additives.
