Nutritional Needs Of Your Shih Tzu Puppy

During the early months of your Shih Tzu’s life, it’s very important to feed your puppy good quality food that will meet their nutritional needs.  The early months are obviously important as your dog develops into an adult, so attention should be paid to a few important factors.

As puppies have a rapid growth rate they tend to burn more calories than adults dogs and this has to be reflected in the food you feed them. Like other small dogs, Shih Tzu puppies should be given a food high in protein as they burn more calories due to their size.

However, even though they need a lot of food during this period they only have a small stomach so it’s important to provide smaller portions that are high in calories. A good guide for determining if a puppy food is a calorie-rich food if to check the percentage of protein. If the protein amount is above 25% then this is a good amount of protein for your puppy.

If you don’t provide your puppy with a food that has an appropriate amount of protein then you will notice they always seem hungry and appear to be over-eating. This is because the puppy foods that are of lower quality will be stuffed with byproducts and unhealthy fillers that don’t satisfy their needs. This will leave their bodies craving for the nutrients they are being deprived. One of the consequences of this is that even though your puppy is not getting the right amount of certain nutrients they can still put on weight leading to obesity.

Obesity in small dogs is a very serious health concern and may lead to some of the following illnesses:

  • Breathing problems.
  • Heart Problems.
  • Arthritis.
  • Diabetes.
  • Skin Conditions.
  • Increased risk of heatstroke.
  • Stomach problems.
  • Liver problems.

Below is a chart to give you an idea of how much food you should be feeding your puppy.  If you are following these guidelines and your dog always seems hungry then you may want to check the ingredients of your current puppy food and consider making a change. After 9 months you change the portions suitable for an adult dog.

Another thing to consider when deciding on the food for your puppy is the size of the kibble (if you are planning on feeding your Shih Tzu dry food). Due to the Shih Tzu’s unusual facial structure, the size and shape of the kibble is an important consideration. If you are going to feed your puppy dry food then you should look for a food that is easy for them to pick up with their mouths and chew with relative ease.

One of the most distinguishing features of a Shih Tzu is their gorgeous coat and the food they eat plays a very important role in its growth and general condition. As the coat grows at a fairly fast rate it’s important that the food you provide is rich in the nutrients and vitamins necessary for healthy skin and hair growth. The ingredients you should focus on for a healthy coat include Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats and Vitamin A. These ingredients will keep the skin in good condition and their hair healthy.

It is enriched with a specific nutrient complex including EPA, DHA and vitamin A which helps to maintain healthy skin. It also contains a good balance of healthy bacteria that help to promote healthy digestion reducing stool odor and volume. This food is suitable for Shih Tzu puppies from 8 weeks to 10 months old.

  1. I found this post interesting and very relevant to exploring feeding options for my ten-week-old shih tzu. In the past as “rescuer” of border collies, I had wonderful results with a raw diet. Aside from the effort required to produce raw food, and knowing that my puppy is yet too young to consider this, I nevertheless wonder if the subject of a raw or modified-raw diet is one you might consider addressing in a future post.
