Earthbath Detangler – Best Choice

So your Shih Tzu either has some mild tangling in their coat or some areas of matted hair that needs to be brushed out or removed.

Dogs are very active animals and it’s almost inevitable that they’ll get knotted or matted hair at some point. Thankfully, along with some elbow grease, there are some good products out there that will help you brush out the tangles with as little stress for your Shih Tzu as possible. And leave them smelling great!

In this article, I’ll give an overview of what causes tangling and matting, how you can remove it, what equipment you’ll need and recommend some quality detangling and dematting sprays that will help with the job.

Jump straight to the detangling and dematting sprays…

What Is Matted Hair And How Does It Occur?

Matted hair and tangles most often occur in your dog’s coat in areas of friction. These places include under the collar, the armpit area, the abdomen and the lower legs where the dog comes in contact with grass.

Matted hair can also occur in places that are regularly compacted. For example, if your Shih Tzu always sits on the same side then this is a possible area that matting might occur.

But the most common cause of matting in dog hair is due to the neglect of their owners. Regularly brushing your dog is very important as it not only keeps the coat looking healthy but is also important to avoid some serious health issues.

In more serious cases, severe matting can cut off the blood supply to certain areas and restrict air circulation. Your dog’s skin can become very unhealthy if it’s denied good blood flow and air circulation. In some cases, this can lead to areas of the skin producing open sores that can be very painful for your dog.

Even mild matting can cause a lot of pain for your dog when trying to brush it out.

Severe untreated matting can also attract debris that can be become embedded in the skin. It’s also a perfect environment for fly larvae to breed that can cause even further problems.

So as you can see it’s very important to keep on top of grooming your dog to prevent any of these things occurring.

How To Remove Matted Hair

If your Shih only has a mild case of matted hair you should be able to either brush them out or cut them out with specially designed brushes and a good quality dematting or detangling spray. To complete this job you’ll need to either get a good quality splitter brush or a mat splitter comb or possibly both. To learn about these brushes and combs you can read my article – The best brush for a Shih Tzu.

Whether you bathe your dog before trying to get rid of matted or tangled hair is a matter of debate. Some groomers believe that the water will tighten the fur and others believe that the bath will help to loosen debris. This is something you will have to try out yourself and see what works best for you.

In my experience, I’ve found it easier to remove matted clumps of hair after I’ve bathed and thoroughly dried my Shih Tzu, but you’ll have to experiment for yourself. If you decide to bathe your dog, always remember to use a good quality, specially formulated shampoo and conditioner for dogs.

If you already have a good quality slicker brush or mat splitter you can follow the instructions in the following video.

If your Shih Tzu’s matting is really bad then a detangling brush or a dematting brush may not get the job done and you’ll need to either shave your dogs with clippers yourself or take them to a professional groomer.
